History of SPIR Foundation

The Society for Pediatric Interventional Radiology (SPIR) elected its first Board of Directors in 2007, marking the formal organization of a community dedicated to advancing the emerging field of pediatric interventional radiology. The society held its first Annual Meeting in October 2009, establishing a forum for education, collaboration, and the advancement of research in this rapidly evolving subspecialty.

Through its annual meetings and educational initiatives, SPIR has played a central role in promoting training, innovation, and scholarly exchange, helping the field develop its own distinct identity within interventional radiology. What began as a small group of 78 members has grown into an international society with 427 members representing 37 countries.

As the society expanded, its leadership recognized the increasing need to strengthen efforts in education, research, and global outreach. In response, a Global Outreach Committee was established in 2022 to further promote these goals and extend SPIR’s impact worldwide.

Building on this vision, the idea of establishing a dedicated foundation emerged to help generate sustainable funding to advance SPIR’s mission. This vision culminated in the formal establishment of the SPIR Foundation in July 2025, creating a platform to support education, research, and global initiatives that will continue to shape the future of pediatric interventional radiology.
